Welcome!

I'm Marie Glasgow aka the Silver City Celebrant!

Who am I?

So, let me tell you about myself- my name is Marie Glasgow- and I'm a Commonwealth Registered Marriage Celebrant. I came to it later in life, after having spent time as a stay at home mum, and working assorted jobs that just didn't fulfill me, and I've always been someone who just loves love, and that path led me here today.

Why am I the Silver City Celebrant? I live in a remote, beautiful area of Tasmania- a town filled with history- once known as the Silver City way back when. I decided on Silver City Celebrant to honour the past life of this sweet town, as a melting pot of phenomenal vistas and deep green rainforests, mixed with a rich mining heritage- all combined with modern biking tracks that show off just how breathtaking our part of Tasmania can be.

I love to create, and when I'm not crafting ceremonies, I sew and craft, and I love to teach people from all walks of life new skills, and I think that creativity definitely helps me write beautiful, heartfelt bespoke ceremonies for my couples.

I love animals, so if you want to include your favourite furred or feathered friend in your ceremony, we can do that, I am open to your suggestions and ideas to create a ceremony that's really you, we want to include all members of your family after all!

I am an avid gamer, from tabletop games to video games- so if you want to get married dressed as video game characters, or want to cosplay characters from your favourite fandom- I'm your Celebrant! I am willing and able, let's make it happen!

What Ceremonies do I do?

Questions I am often asked:

As your Commonwealth Registered Marriage Celebrant, it is my job to ensure that you understand the legal requirements that must be met, and to ensure that these legal requirements are followed according to Australian law so that you have a valid & legally binding marriage.

A Registered Marriage Celebrant may solemnise marriages anywhere in Australia including outside the State or Territory in which they reside.

When solemnising marriages, celebrants are responsible for performing the ceremony, including ensuring the compulsory legal components are recited and witnessed, and most importantly, completing and lodging all the legal paperwork with the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages in the State or Territory where your marriage is solemnised.

Celebrants do ongoing professional development each year and are bound by a code of practice.

The "Celebrants Code of Practice" outlines the obligations, requirements and penalties associated with Civil Marriage Celebrants and non-secular Celebrants under Australian Law.  Please visit www.ag.gov.au "Code of Practice" for full details.

I am happy to provide a printed copy of the Code of Practice if you request.

You will need:

  • Evidence of date and place of birth e.g. original birth certificate or birth extract, passport

  • Photographic evidence of identity e.g. drivers licence, passport, proof of age card

  • Evidence of the end of a previous marriage e.g. divorce certificate, death certificate

Ideally, these original documents should be sighted at the time of lodging your NOIM with me (as your Celebrant). Alternatively, your NOIM and original supporting documents can be lodged with me (as your Celebrant) via electronic form including an email (scanned), text messaging a photo of the document, or facsimile.

In some exceptional cases a Statutory Declaration may be acceptable. If you cannot provide any of the above, we should have a chat, and discuss alternative options.

All identification documents sighted by the celebrant or electronically provided must be originals. A statutory declaration must be a signed original. However, a divorce certificate can be original or a certified copy.

What are the legal requirements for marriage in Australia?

Marriage is regulated by the Marriage Act 1961 (Cth) and the Marriage Regulations 2017 (Cth). All marriages in Australia must be conducted in accordance with this legislation. The legislation specifies the requirements for the marriage ceremony as well as matters that arise before and after the ceremony.

You don’t have to be an Australian citizen or a permanent resident of Australia to legally marry here. To be legally married in Australia, two people must:

  • not be married to someone else

  • not be marrying a parent, grandparent, child, grandchild, brother or sister

  • be at least 18 years old, unless a court has approved a marriage where one party is aged between 16 and 18 years old

  • lodge a Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) with their celebrant no less than one month and no more than 18 months before their ceremony

  • understand what marriage means and freely consent to being married

  • sign a declaration stating there are no legal impediments to the marriage e.g. already married, underage, too closely related etc.

  • use specific words during the ceremony i.e. the ‘monitum’ spoken by the celebrant and ‘the vows’ spoken by each party to marriage

  • have two witnesses at the ceremony who are at least 18 years of age who will be required to sign the marriage certificates

  • ensure their celebrant registers the marriage with the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages within 14 days.

The number one step in the marriage process is meeting with your celebrant to complete your Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) which is to be signed, witness and lodged with the celebrant. By law, this must be done at least one month prior to the wedding date. A longer time is preferable with 18 months being the maximum amount of advance notice.

As an Authorised Marriage Celebrant, I have certain obligations under the Marriage Act 1961.  Once we have discussed what wording can and cannot be excluded-  I will create you a personalised ceremony- or I can even guide you on how to create your own! You may like to include symbols, types of dress, a special dedication or a cultural tradition or ritual- it's your day- so other than the legal bit- the possibilities are endless!
